I have a decorating wedding business that has really been taking off lately. Growing up, I used to wonder what all of the colorful lines and symbols meant. I never saw them in the suburbs, but along highways going into the city or when we drove into a poor neighborhood they would pop up again and again, visible through glass of the backseat window.

I liked the different colors and images, but something seemed wrong about them. Why were they there? What did they mean? Who made them? As I got older I learned one answer to these questions. They were acts of vandalism, attempts to destroy property done by bad kids. (Almost all of whom were portrayed as black or poor, though I didn’t realize it until later). I left it at that for a while, trying to imagine what small-minded motivation would lead someone to go and try to mess up something for no reason at all. A part of me, however, could see the excitement from sneaking over a fence and out into the night with a can of spray-paint and an objective. Like urban guerrilla warfare. There was a hint of excitement when I thought of it, but not enough to override the stigma and the fear of getting caught doing something wrong. Suffice to say, I never went anywhere near it myself. Sometime after high school I was introduced to a different perspective.
I chided the notion at first. It seemed like a rationalization and an excuse for causing trouble. But it took a deeper understanding of the urban landscape, of the poverty, the claustrophobia, the clashes with police and power, to understand that graffiti was in many ways an act of protest, and a means of expression. When done by those with creative ideas, and skilled hands it ‘was’ art. When combined with a thoughtful mind and a grasp of the pain and beauty of life in that environment, it could rise to poetry. I liked this idea, and settled into it. It seemed to erase some of the stigma, the grit of the city. In the past few years, neither the initial portrayal of graffiti as vandalism nor the idealistic view of all graffiti as art has persisted. Or they both did in a way, but with more nuance and complication.
I learned that graffiti was not merely vandalism; sometimes it was tagging by gangs, announcing their claim on territory to anyone who would dare cross it. Like animals in a jungle or trolls under a bridge. I also learned that graffiti was literally done by some artists, people who put their work up in galleries and were paid by public projects to create pieces. Some of the graffiti artists were even white and wealthy, as seems to happen when something original and authentic makes its way from a subculture into the mainstream. Other acts of graffiti turned out to simply be kids messing around, trying to lash out at a world of adults and go outside the boundaries of society to leave a mark. That’s what graffiti always does, I suppose, to strike out towards something beyond oneself. To challenge it, to deface it, to expose it. To illuminate it, if you’re good enough. Either way, graffiti is quietly screaming something, and if we take the time to stop and notice we can find out what.
